Willie deWit

Willie deWit is most remembered as a former amateur and professional boxer in the heavyweight division and won many amateur boxing titles including three time Canadian amateur champion, two time North American Champion, Commonwealth Games gold medalist, two time World Amateur Champion and 1984 Olympic Silver medalist. He was also the Canadian Professional Heavyweight Champion. After retiring from the ring in 1988, Willie deWit returned to school and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1994 with a law degree. He articled to the Alberta Court of Appeal and the civil law firm of Howard Mackie and was called to the Alberta Bar in September of 1995. After practicing with Howard Mackie Mr. deWit joined the firm of Evans Martin Wilson in 1996 and, although the original partners have retired or becomes judges, he remains with the firm until this day, being it’s longest standing member.

Since joining the firm, Mr. deWit has practiced in the areas of criminal, environmental and occupational health and safety law. He has significant experience in all aspects of criminal law including assaults, fraud, impaired driving, drug offences and has appeared at all levels of Court in the Province of Alberta. He is the former president of the Canadian Bar Association Criminal Law subsection and has been active with several charities including serving as a board member for Inn From the Cold for 5 years.
